A look at Fantasy Flight Games' upcomming 2007 releases

It’s no secret that Fantasy Flight Games is probably the most important Ameritrash game company in existence today. They more or less have the market currently cornered, with Steve Jackson games being no real competition, Games Workshop too fixated on their miniature lines, the new Avon Hill deader than Michael Barne’s sex life and Days of Wonder having a release schedule slower than growing grapes. Therefore their upcoming plans should be of interest to all readers of the site (unless you come here for the nude chicks on bikes found in the secret section.)

These plans for 2007 were just announced by the company, though I nearly missed them due to this mornings ‘days of our geek’ events. So let’s take a look at the rest of this years schedule:

You can find the press release list here:

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/2007products.html

BEOWULF THE MOVIE BOARDGAME

Now this one is an interesting addition, considering FFG released a Beowulf game not so long ago. This one is based on the upcoming 3D animated film, so hopefully will be a tad more thematic than Knizia’s rather dry previous offering. Still, it’s interesting that they went for this title considering it could cause some product line confusion. The blurb has very little on game play so what it will consist of is anyone’s guess.

STARCRAFT: THE BOARD GAME

We already knew about this one. Next!

WORLD OF WARCRAFT: THE ADVENTURE GAME

Ok, what the hell?

Now I realize WoW must be a massive cash cow for FFG (or anyone for that matter), but seriously, I already have a WoW game where I can play one of 9 classes and 8 exotic races, and you guys were the ones who sold that to me in the first place! So apart from a budget version of a game I already own, what else does this game offer me? Based on the description given, game play which sounds exactly like Runebound!

Even the title sucks. “The Adventure Game”? Well what was the other one, the misadventure game?

It may be early, but so far it seems like the FFG crew may need to take a journey down into a well of creativity and bring back a few extra buckets full!

WORLD OF WARCRAFT: THE BOARD GAME, THE BURNING CRUSADE EXPANSION

Umm, which board game was this an expansion to again?

I’m actually quite looking forward to this one; I’ve heard rumors that this one mixes up the game play quite a bit and the main game does feel like it could do with another expansion or two to flesh it out more.

COLD WAR: CIA VS. KGB

It’s a different topic to the norm, so it should be one to watch out for. I have a feeling I read somewhere it’s a card game made by a third party, but I could be wrong. Anyway I’ll keep my eye on it.

MUTANT CHRONICLES

I was a playtester for this so am under an NDA and therefore can’t comment.

I will say though that since it seems Doom: the boardgame has been finished with, where the hell is my siege of the citadel / Blood berets reprint?

A GAME OF THRONES: FIVE KINGS EDITION

I don’t play CCGs and the last thing my wallet needs is for me to play CCGs. Still if you do play I’m sure you’ll be happy with this.

SOME ROLEPLAYING CRAP

A couple of roleplaying games got announced. I keep my roleplaying to the bedroom, but I’m certain smelly dungeon master dorks all over are rejoicing at these releases.

I kid! I kid! I kid because I love! Now put that D20 down please…

WINGS OF WAR: DAWN OF WAR

I wouldn’t mind trying this game out but the release of it seems a mess, and I couldn’t work heads or tails of it out. Apart from that it looks fun, especially if you use the new 3D planes. I wonder if you can combine this with Tide of Iron to make one mega game?

RUNEBOUND: MORE DECKS & 4th BIG BOX

As everyone knows I’m a runebound junkie, but even I’m starting to question if I need even more market items!

I was expecting more class decks next, but I guess there are no plans to expand on those.

I am excited for another big boxed adventure, you can never have enough of those, but I do wish that they would do some expansions for the existing ones. Yes I know, I’m asking for an expansion of the expansions!

DESCENT: ROAD TO LEGEND

I’m a playtester for this so I can’t comment on it.

Good to see there are plans for a fourth expansion though. Stick that up your ass dungeonquest fanboys.

WORLD TANK CAMPAIGNS

Another game which was already announced.

TIDE OF IRON: DAYS OF THE FOX

Will this mark the first expansion that is released before it’s main game?

Interesting choice for a first expansion, guess they wanted to cover ground that Memoir ’44 didn’t. Bit disappointed there are no Italians though.

So there you have it. Overall I have to say I’m rather disappointed – I already knew about most of the expansions and the few new games that were announced seem to be retreads of other stuff. The 2006 lineup just seemed a lot more ‘fresh’.

Or maybe I’m just becoming a jaded ATer and need to get back into Euros?

Bah, there is nothing on that list that really strikes me as particularly interesting. Starcraft perhaps, we shall see.

Certainly nothing on that list that get's me a-twitter like TI:3 or the other defining FFG stuff.

I was really hoping to see at least one or two updated/streamlined reprints of some AT classics (In the vein of Fury of Dracula and Warrior Knights). Too bad they didn't get Titan or RoR first, I'd love to see reworked modernized streamlined version of those! Instead of just the pretty straight reprints I expect from Valley Games (Not that I'm complaining, of course, I'm still giddy someone is reprinting them, I just think they could be streamlined a bit)

Man there are so many AH games alone I'd love to see get the 'Fury of Dracula' treatment:

Advanced Civilization
Blackbeard
Dune (just don't change too much!)
Kremlin
Magic Realm
Merchant of Venus
Up Front
or at least as you said a reprint of MC:Siege of the Citadel.

Oh well...

What'll it cost me for acces to the "secret section".

Yeah, I said it...what?

I agree with both Mr. Skeletor and Jezztek. Ho hum. I'm not a big roleplayer, so the most promising offerings for 2007--assuming they make 2007, of course--are StarCraft and the Mutant Chronicles collectable game. I wish we could get a hint how the latter will be. And yes, at long last, where IS Siege of the Citadel? Let's move, FFG!

Jezztek makes some interesting points about possible FFG reprints, but half of them are really more wargamey-grognard games than FFG's market could support: RoR, Advanced Civ, Blackbeard, and Up Front. It's hard to see what FFG could do with those stylistically, either. But yes, I am surprised that FFG didn't get the Titan reprint (though I fail to see how the counters could have been "plasticized") and the other suggestions he makes are spot on. One can only hope...

Julian said...

It seems a bit of a dull release schedule, although it's hard to tell with some of these games until they come out.

What happened to Tannhauser? Is that still coming out? That's the one I'm really looking forward to.

Nice to see that there is a new episode of As the Geek Turns out. Nice twist on the old banning theme.

Ken B. said...

Tannhauser and Conan (though that doesn't look like it will make this year) are their best future bets. Tide of Iron is practically here and that will be their smash hit this year--and their expansion cash cow for years to come afterward. (After all, if WotC can sell people on that bare-bones Axis and Allies Minis system just because of the theme, FFG will be leading gamers like the pied piper here.)

I keep hoping that FFG is going to surprise us with a BIG reprint like Dune, Space Hulk, or something similar. If this "Valley Games" can afford to pony up the cash for the rights, then surely FFG can. And they've got a precedent for reprinting GW in the form of "Fury of Dracula".

Letting something like Titan go to another company has to be sort of a wake-up call for them. They are so dominant in this niche right now they can't afford to let that slip.

I will say though that since it seems Doom: the boardgame has been finished with, where the hell is my siege of the citadel / Blood berets reprint?

This was what I was most interested in. Since the original Heartbreaker minis are hard to find/way overpriced, I don't mind buying boxes of these. I can use them in my other miniature games as well as replacements for the Siege of the Citadel/Fury of the Clansmen/Blood Berets.

As for the reprints, HURRY UP AND DO IT ALREADY, FANTASY FLIGHT! Also, could you PLEASE add some scenarios to Blood Berets? Thank you!

Ken B. said...

Blood Berets definitely needs some rules help, a change from the weird "diagonal facing" that the action uses, and a TON more scenarios. And a MUCH cleaner ruleset. Otherwise, yeah, that would make a killer reprint.

Mr Skeletor said...

What happened to Tannhauser? Is that still coming out? That's the one I'm really looking forward to.

Yes, the other omission is "the king in yellow" (Arkham horror expansion), I think it's because these have been already announced.

silentdibs said...

A reworking of Blackbeard is coming from GMT.

MMP still holds the rights to Up Front.

I agree Merchant of Venus is a good candidate for reprinting/reworking, but the others...

They might be unwilling to keep going down that route because I don't see FoD or WK flying off the shelves anywhere. Not at the same rate as their main line of games, anyway.

Ken B. said...

I thought FoD was a big hit for them?

BGG has 1331 listed owners, that's a large chunk. Maybe it *only* sold to the fanboys? Who knows.

Michael Barnes said...

It seems that FFG might be shifting more to "system" games, which makes sense in light of all the expansions on the slate...on the one hand, I love expansions and I think that adding replayability and developing game concepts further gives more value to the consumer but on the other I do like to see new designs from these guys...that being said, they've got two big "system" games coming out this year (STARCRAFT and TIDE OF IRON) so I guess that's plenty!

Some thoughts:

STARCRAFT could be amazing...based on the sparse descriptions, it sounds like it will be. It's interesting that a 10 year old PC game license still carries so much value. Of course, it's still probably the best RTS ever.

BEOWULF...come on guys, this is the second BEOWULF game you've done with tired-ass, themeless Euro mechanics. Who wants to play a game based on one of the great stories in literature (well, the movie I guess) where Beowulf and Grendel are numbered tiles? No thanks. Maybe mass market will be more interested than me.

WoW stuff- Eh. Not a big fan of the past FFG WoW stuff, and not a fan of the license at all. Should sell well though. I sold 25 copies of the WoW board game the week it came out. That's A LOT.

CIA VS KGB- _Great_ theme, even if it is a little bit of a cash-in on TWILIGHT STRUGGLE. Will buy.

TIDE OF IRON expansion- No Italians? Hell, at this point I don't even have Germans and Americans so I'll take what I can get.

DESCENT expansion- interested to see where it goes. If it makes the game take place in more of a "world" it could be a turning point for the game.

MUTANT CHRONICLES- I still think a reprint/redevelopment of SIEGE OF THE CITADEL would be a better idea but it's so similar to DOOM/DESCENT that they'd be stepping on their own products' toes. I'll have to see it first. Not likely to collect.

WINGS OF WAR- I've had enough of this series, at least until it gets a STAR WARS license.

RPG Stuff- guys, it's time to start selling that stuff on PDF and free up the printers.

And the not-mentioned- CONDOTIERRE reprint (definite buy), KING IN YELLOW (definite buy), TANNHAUSER (definite buy), an as-yet-unannounced ARKHAM HORROR "big expansion" (DEFINITE buy)...

A note on FURY OF DRACULA...it's sold well for me and I'll say that the only reason I haven't sold more is that it was unavailable for a couple of months, awaiting reprint. FFG games sometime fall temporarily out of print like that...the worst was when ARKHAM HORROR was out of stock for over 6 months.

As for the Valley Games reprints...yeah, it's a damn shame FFG didn't get those but there's a hell of a lot more money in what FFG is doing...it seems like to us, entrenched in the hobby and with a skewed sense of what's in demand, that TITAN will sell a million copies. The fact is, it will do well sell 5000 copies whereas something like STARCRAFT will sell tens of thousands of copies.

Michael Barnes said...

Oops- left some stuff out...

RUNEBOUND expansions- nope. Don't like the system at all. Definitely good news for fans though.

WORLD TANK CAMPAIGNS- I knew they'd do something with all those models...interesting that they got a bona fide wargame designer to do it. Could be a really cool game, who doesn't love tanks- especially big, detailed model ones!

REINS OF POWER- 2008? Well, alright, you guys are busy...

What I would like most to see is a new Aliens boardgame.

Swabbleflange said...

I'm quite interested in the WoW 'adventure'. I haven't taken the plunge with Descent or Runebound and I quite fancy another Talisman-ish overworld romp (though picking up the new Talisman itself is a no-brainer). I did enjoy the MMO for the time I played it so the license to me is a big draw.

Anonymous said...

STARCRAFT could be amazing...based on the sparse descriptions, it sounds like it will be. It's interesting that a 10 year old PC game license still carries so much value. Of course, it's still probably the best RTS ever.

Hopefully this will be what I wanted TI:3 to be. I haven't even tried TI:3 because it did things that make me die on the inside (the Puerto Rico action role choice mechanic GO! mechanism), so maybe this will be that epic conquer-the-galaxy game I've been desperately seeking. And Starcraft is so goddamn good there's no way it can be bad.

I'm so angry I got Doom instead of Descent. I love Doom dearly, it's a spectacular game, but Descent has so much more expandability whereas Doom is Done. So I'm either going to have to buy the expansion and be content with my awesome but ultimately finished Doom game, or suck it up and finally get Descent. I like the fantasy theme more anyways. I knew I should've waited. Damn me to hell.

As for the WoW stuff, I have Heroscape. That's enough for me. Maybe I'll pick up an expansion deck or two, but I was never that interested.

ToI is cool, but as a snooty wargamer I'm going to be irritated by it, I just know it. Same way I treat Memoir with such disdain, even though the game don't deserve it. I'll probably cave in and buy it anyways, but I won't enjoy it.

Valley Games, though... man. They have a good bit of my money I'll say. Titan and Hannibal AND Republic of Rome. Looks like Mare Nostrum is gonna have to take a back seat after all :(

Pat H said...

Tide of Iron will do it for me. I read the rules and the only gripe I have at this moment are the trimmed down armor rules and no AT guns.

World tank museum models will work with TOI but without armor rules there is no point. Tank and heavy tank don't cut it. They don't need to get all ASL but some variance would be nice - SP Guns, tank destroyers etc...

I'll still buy TOI based on the fact that non-grognards will play it and it will have much life and expandability.

Tannhaueser is on the shelves here in french. I haven't seen anyone playing yet but I know some people have picked it up.

Starcraft looks intriguing however if I remember correctly the BGG description indicates no dice. I can't wrap my head around combat without dice - AT sacrilege.

I have too many rpg look-a-likes to give a shit about another one. World of Warcraft - meh.

Michael Barnes said...

I can't wrap my head around combat without dice - AT sacrilege.

Hello? DUNE? It's the killin' that matters, not how the killin's done.

Shellhead said...

After the disappointment that was Descent, the only thing that I am excited about from the 2007 FFG releases is that small King in Yellow expansion for Arkham Horror. And I may eventually buy Marvel Heroes, though it's hard to get a four-player game on the table with our group. We don't like to split into smaller games, we like big chaotic and social games. Or, at least I do, and everybody else just plays along.

At this point, I'm more interested in assembling my own 9-player Game of Thrones set from the downloads created by those wacky Westeros guys.

Pat H said...

Never played Dune. I like dice. Last night I ruled Fortress America with 10's from lasers and my buddy had no chance with his 1's and 2's.

If the combat is robust and involves all of the games' (RTS) units (in plastic of course) I'll check it out. All I'm saying is they might be trying to target a certain crowd that plays woody games but likes all things Blizzard. Definitely something I'll check out.

On a side note I did experience some snootiness last night when I walked in with my FA game. I overheard some holier than though comments but these soon evaporated once the beer's started flowing and my buddy and I were becoming quite rowdy. Several people who out of fear of being ostracized by their euro pals would not have taken a second look, eventually warmed up to the "Cool" game we were playing. I think we fought through the initial snootiness quite well and eventually won over some converts for the next session where I will break out another classic.

Anonymous said...

PatH, I'm not sure you can be a true ATer without having experienced the sublime brilliance that is Dune. That game transcends all game genres, it's so good. I look forward to FFG reprinting it (when they do), but I hope they don't muck around with it like they did Warrior Knights. There's a time to Euro, but most of the time not.

I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I can't quite get all juiced up over all the ever-loving expansions FFG churns out. I'd really rather they use the time and materials to publish new games, even--gasp!--entirely original ones. I'm pretty sure they've learned from their mistakes. Their new big games are vastly more popular than their expansions.

But maybe it's also that Runebound/WoW/Descent/TI3/AH/AGoT aren't a way of life for me as they may be for many here. I don't need new cards, new options, new characters; I just need a good, solid game....like FoD. ToI sounds like it will be great, but honestly, how many expandable WW2 games do I need? Memoir, ToI, CC:E... The expansion craze gets especially irtritating when the games being expoansded upon just aren't that great, or the expansion is more of a fix than an expansion per se. I think the TI3 xpac turned things around for a lot of lukewarm TI3 players, but that's really a fix, isn't it? And would ToI or SC or Mutant Chronicles be so far away if the pipeline weren't clogged with expansion #74?

Anonymous said...

Certainly "The King in Yellow", maybe "Conan"... And that's all for me. I'm already a litle in tactical wargames, so I don't feel like I Need one introduction to Squad Leader-level wargame when I already know Squad Leader and other tactiacl wargames...

I'm a bit disapointed. I think they should calm down the extension craze and produce or re-release more original "average"-priced (50-60 dollars) games... Well, less games to buy, more money to spend on other things !

Southernman said...

Pat - well done waking up your sterile euro-geeks with FA. I was introduced to it a couple of weeks ago and it is on my hot to-get list - yes, that's right, introduced to it. I'm from New Zealand and in the 80's (and 90s) I was more into drinking and going to sports matches plus the place was probably a bit off the track for games back then.
But we made a hell of a lot more noise playing it than any game I can remember for quite awhile.

Well wait a minute - forgiveness is for whimps. Michael you will need to place an asterisk next to your "AT badge" for this "mistake" and we'll make a go at forgetting what you said. You should just lie about it next time - lying is easier than telling the truth. Now lets see how long it takes some asshole to clip that remark and post it at the Aldie and Steve show.

I'll be breaking out Shogun next time for some old school blood letting.

Pat H said...

Hey Tom it looks like we did much of the same thing back then. Apparently so did Michael because he must have been drunk to sell off his FA.

In all seriousness mine was buried in a box with my other Gamemaster series games and I am surprised that it survived all my moves over 15 years without suffering too much. Several of the pieces were cannibalized into Epic Space Marines games (the helicopters especially and the lasers)and it took me a few hours to locate all of the pieces.

I may well have lost my copy as well but I have a hard time throwing anything out or selling anything. Whenever I tell myself to get rid of something I may never use I always remember that my hobbies are somewhat cyclical and I may very well place value on something again.

Wings of War is a great game- I've got a copy of Famous Aces, and its one of the better dogfighting games I've played in a LONG time. (BTW- I've played Blue Max (GDW) Richtoffen's War (AH), the old Sierra PC game Red Baron, and Canvas Eagles (miniatures). It plays quick, is really intuitive, and is a lot of fun. Its only real fault is that it doesn't have dice- but then, Blue Max didn't either.

The Descent expansion also looks interesting- I'm kinda 'meh' on Starcraft.

Oh man, the best was that Paul Sauerbrauten guy coming on there and basically accusing Weeks' "cronies" (whoever they are)of "retaliating" by complaining to BGG's ISP and going on to state that BGG could very well shut down because of Weeks' joke.

I am appauled at what has happened in the gaming world lately. Michael Barnes gave away his copy of Fortress Ameritrash.! There's no way to justify this. Barnes gave away a game in which the NRA can fight off invading Mexicans, to get El Grande! We need a new supreme leader! And I don't want a benevolent dictator. I want a malevolent one.

I suggest that the remaining ATers play a game of something back-stabby (maybe Diplomacy) to decide who should be the new king of the Fortress.

Yeah, I'm going to take your advice from a while back and leave. I'm tired of justifying what should be a very obvious stance. The weird thing about FFG is that the biggest Ameritrash game company's #1 designer is Reiner Knizia.

Julian, get it straight- I didn't give away FORTRESS AMERICA...I sold it for like $75, and that was 10 years ago. AND...I am malevolent. GOD DAMN malevolent.

I'll tell you what, Mr. Skeletor...once you get away from posting on BGG you realize what a morass of double standards, megalomania, and self-important posturing it's become over there. The database and its attendant features are still vital and indispensible to the hobby but at this point the "community" aspect is almost completely irrelevant- if not harmful- to the larger boardgaming hobby. I am _glad_ to no longer participate in discussions of any sort there.

Ratpfinks says...

The weird thing about FFG is that the biggest Ameritrash game company's #1 designer is Reiner Knizia.

Umm...I'd say that Christian Petersen is their #1 designer...aside from BLUE MOON (not the board game) and the LOTR games, none of those Knizia titles are "best sellers". If you're looking for #2, it's likely Kevin Wilson.

Oh it's always been like that, just like everywhere else on the internet. The difference was before it was enjoyable, now not so much.
Anyway I told Derk to just to ban me if he wants instead of using it as a tool to inspire fear in me or whatever.
I'll still use the DB features - as you said they are brilliant. I'll just keep away from the 'community'. Well at least I'll try.

Well, Knizia is #1 in raw number of titles. It's not really close either, he's got as many titles on FFG as Wilson and Peterson combined. And if you want to use sales as a metric, I'd find it hard to believe that Peterson's and Wilson's games combined have sold more copies than just LOTR.

Michael Barnes said...

Nice retort 'fink- you're right, LOTR has likely outsold all of Petersen and Wilson's games put together and you are right that the raw number of Knizia titles is greater...however, Petersen's the freakin' CEO of the company, so I think that makes him pretty firmly #1! Aside from that, the titles I think we're going to see have the longest longevity are going to be the Peterson (GoT, TI3, WoW) and Wilson (DESCENT) ones...I mean come on...GREAT WALL OF CHINA? LOCO? BEOWULF?

My biggest loss in not participating in BGG forums is that I no longer have the ability to post my suggestions for how to store a game and all its expansions in one box...or complain loudly that children aren't allowed at a board game convention, or post whatever other trainspotting bullshit I see fit. I also no longer have the ability to complain about my FLGS, jeopardize the sales of a game with repetitively negative nitpicking comments, bitch about the popularity of video games, "muse" about penguin games, report my annual game purchase total, let the world know what color I like to play, or post photographs of fat, ugly people.

I just got an email from BGG- I won a free microbadge for writing at least 5 reviews...Lajos, if you're listening, can you make me a "BANNED" one?

Anonymous said...

So you're as excited about Knizia's new Penguin game on FFG as the rest of us?!?

Oh, the irony...

There are two things I'd really like to know from the list:

1. Is the new Mutant Chronicles hex based? The bases are hexy, and range rulers are annoying. And hexes are kind of warm and comforting.

2. Who is designing the WoW adventure game? It is cheaper than Runebound, and it claims to be quick-moving--which definitely leaves out Runebound.

Also, no official FFG mention of the War of the Ring Collector's Edition yet...

I wonder if any reprint of Dune would be hopelessly tied up in legalities. I saw a rumor on BGG recently that Pro Ludo was reprinting Dune in Europe only (i.e., like the Descartes version; non-English), but I haven't seen this confirmed.

The MC early playtest version I played was hex based.
No idea on who designed WoW:tAG (god that title sucks)

Is the WOTR mega version due out this year?

One of the designers posted recently on BGG that they were looking at Fall 2007, though this seems pretty quick.
