First Annual F:AT Invitational TI3 game

The time has come to crown a champ. We here at F:AT play a lot of games. You, our sometimes faithful readers, play a lot of games; someone has to rise to the top and claim the prize as the most bad assed gamer ever to read an article written by Michael Barnes.

Thats right! it is time to put your strategy cards selections where your collective mouths are. It is time for the Inaugural Fortress Ameritrash Invitational TI3 game. This game will decide who among us will have the title of Ti3 Bad Ass '07.

Now I know you are asking yourselves "How the fuck can I get in on this action?" Well it is an invitational, so you need to be invited. But this is not some sort of inner circle Gathering of Friends type thing. No no we don't play like that here at the Fortress. I personally will be picking the players based on who proves themselves most worthy of competition. How do you do that? well the only guideline is that it must be done as a reply to this blog. So convince me that you are worth inviting.

Note: that you must be prepared to play Ti3 on the wiki site (www.ti3wiki.org). You have to be familar with the game. Sorry but no newbies can be crowned Bad Ass. In addition there will be some House Rules for this game that change things a bit (thanks to the folks who I ruthlessly stole these ideas from.) You must be willing to play the game online, this requires checking the Google group/wiki daily Monday - Friday. Also be prepared for a long game, these thing can take months to complete so be ready for the long haul.

So post up your reasons as to why you deserve a shot at the title. F:AT bloggers (save myself) are eligible to play. I will post up the players shortly as well as periodic accounts of whats happening in the game for all those weenies who don't make the cut.

The Winner of the game will be the F:AT Bad-Ass for the next 12 months. This entitles you to post replies that say things like "fuck off- I am the F:AT Bad-Ass", along with other "Fringe" benefits like getting all the hot chicks at the bar, that promotion at work and winning the lottery.

Good Luck

I would be totally down for some TI 3 sweetness. Why should you pick me? Several excellent reasons:

1) TI 3 is my favorite game, and I don't get to play that often.

2) I try to get a game together with my friends about once a week, and it always fucking collapses. I have high hopes for Saturday though....

3) I only have four or so games under my belt, so you have a chance to win. Hehheh. I've played lots of TI 2 though. I'll also play without social contracts of any sort, so if I'm losing I don't quit and could strike out at anyone.

4) I do Urban Dead every day (have been for over a year). I'm used to a daily "check the game" thing.

5) I'll let you hold that planet between our two home systems as long as you don't keep any troops or ships there.

First Position has been Filled!

Will Kenyon, TI3 master who dominated the ATL scene has Accepted his free pass to the game that was earned when He completely dominated the F:AT Smackdown Ti3 game.

Will is looking forward to kicking your asses and taunting you endlessly on this blog for an entire year.

I'm down.

I don't post much around here, but it's time to step out of the shadows and prove my gaming badassness.

I should be invited because you need at least one mysterious dark horse in the running.

Plus, once I receive my fringe benefit if winning the lottery, I'll pay you a $45,000/year salary to be one my full-time gaming buddies.

I was trying to figure out the best plan to schmooze permission to beg into the game...

... and then I realized I am going to be away from normal net access for a good week at the end of the month. Maybe another game! I could be the company ringer! 13 days and counting to Iceland :)

Mr Skeletor said...

Several questions:
1) Is that hacan prick who assraped me all last game for no good reason playing again?
2) Is Michael "I can't remember how to use the internet to put in my moves" Barnes playing again?
3) Instead of using email, would it be better to set up a board/forum? This way outsiders can read it, and it might be easier for players to keep up with since its easier to track moves. Maybe have a different thread per turn or something?

I'd suggest delaying the game for you, but I doubt you'll return from sausage fest in one piece.

Sausage fest?!

Ken B. said...

Not again...geez, what is it with you guys?

Muzza said...

That's just about the best idea to ever grace the pages of this tawdry rag*. All it lacks is a rookie comp for all us inexperienced TI3 newbs who intend to be crowned Badass next year.

* I mean that with all due respect.

notbillysparkles said...

Hmmmm... I think muzza's on to something there.

I'd totally be up for a newbie game which would refresh my memory, teach me to use the TI3 wiki.

Anyone?

Bueller?

Long time lurker first time poster.

I'd love to get in on this game TI3 with or without(preferably with) shattered empires is my Number 1 game.

I've played about six or seven games the last one on last Saturday with six, played the Long War with all the bells and whistles, distant suns, leaders. Mangaged to just win in just under 12 hours.

Haven't played on wiki though but know the rules back the front.

And I will kick everyones arse, prepare to be dominated!

Thaadd said...

I expect I will arrive home in one piece. I may be outnumbered, but I'm feisty. (And I have friends I am meeting up with there - always good to have someone at your back).

(Said fest is the >95% male game convention I am going to in Iceland)

Oh! and in super geeky news, may have found a couple copies of an Icelandic boardgame that I have been trying to get ahold of. Out of print, was one of the fundraisers for Eve. Saving on shipping, hopefully just trade in city. And hope to find some way to translate it later! Heh. Planning...

How many players are you shooting for, for the TI3 game? Also, TI3:SE? Actually not played that yet.

Nope Not yet he has to provide a reason to be let in like everyone else, but he ass raping of you may be enough.

2) Is Michael "I can't remember how to use the internet to put in my moves" Barnes playing again?

No, regardless of what barnes posts here unless he can prove that he will be chained to his computer and posting on the message board all day long he is out.

3) Instead of using email, would it be better to set up a board/forum? This way outsiders can read it, and it might be easier for players to keep up with since its easier to track moves. Maybe have a different thread per turn or something?

WTF? Frank the last game was played on a message board here is the url

http://groups.google.com/group/fat-ti3-beatdown

You were getting mails from it because that how you had your pref set, but was a board and you can still go and look at all the posts you missed. :)

I am not sure the game will even be started by then.

Start making the case for your bad assedness.

I can run a newbie game ltoo, give me some time to get this one rolling. GM'ing more than one of these at the same time, is a pain in the ass. So I need to get the 1st one rolling then can get a 2nd one setup.

FYI

We are using the Shattered Empire Strat cards.

I also will making custom Secret Objectives, and may have a few (harder)objectives that start turned up.

There are a few house rules as well.

Check out the map and rules here:

I offer up myself, markball (BGG aka: thniff) as a veteran player both live and on the FFG forum. The forum games as far as I'm concerned are dying due to the instability of their database, so getting them going here is great!

Reasons:
1) Very familiar with the rules.
2) Happier if this is a violent game over a turtling one.
3) I never ever drop a game once started.
4) Won't bitch about race selection.

Blooded Cat said...

Just discovered this blog thanks to a post on the FFG forums.

I've had my fair share of TI3 games with and without SE. Haven't played a wiki game yet, however I'm tied to a computer all day at work and my ass is so bad it's a threat to national security.

Thaadd said...

I think I will try for the newbie game, should one appear. Not done any play by email stuff before, and fairly limited (base game only) TI3 experience.

gudo13 said...

Hulk smash.

gudo13 said...

Guess I should elaborate.

Hulk not only smash, but Hulk has played TI3. Will need to read up on which expansion/house rules you're using.

Also will check in an average of twice a day, and not mind the game taking months.

Lurker out.

JoshBot said...

I'll throw my hat in the ring.
1) I am familiar with the game.
2) I don't bitch about anything.
3) A move a day is no big.
4) I am willing to make erratic, stupid plays just to spice things up a bit.
5) I hold grudges WITHIN games, but not ACROSS them.

Long time reader, first time poster.

I should get an invitation because:

as a BGG (board game geezer (45)) who's played since the original TI I would love to lay the smackdown on some young whipper snappers.

would use F:AT Bad-Ass in our local games, thus spreading the F:AT gospel.

The map looks good. my money would be on the mindnet, given the choice of races. Good to see Yssaril aren't there.

The independent races don't move I assume?

I stole the map... :)

mindnet will be tough, but a target.

I thought about having them move or attack but it would get messy so they just sit there and will rebel if you don't keep a garrison on the planet.

Skellie, I've played all of FOUR games of TI3, and none with Shattered empires.

I know the cards better than most, but that's different from wanting to get my butt handed to me by experienced players.

It's hard to get to table with my normal gaming crew. There have been some disaster experiences, with people playing who really should have not been - and who made an 8 hour game torture. I do want to try the whole Wiki aspect though, as it could let me play without having to sort out people...

Ken B. said...

I'm out because the TI wiki is blocked at work and I can never promise how much I can check in at night. Good luck to all who are playing.

Malloc said...

Ken,

One day I will teach you how to setup an ssl proxy at your house... no more blocked at work crap.

-M

Ken B. said...

They monitor for proxies. I was already busted once for that. Luckily the network security guy likes me, but I did get a "Uh, don't do that again."

Anonymous said...

You should have a competition for 'F:AT Fat Ass" I bet that would be a horse race.

Ken B. said...

I'm sure if I spent a few months eating chips, watching "The View", and downing whole plates of bacon, I could probably catch up with you.

Malloc said...

So fat the F:AT folks I have met, Myself, Barnes, Rob Martin, and Uba have all be thin.

The beards and belly types tend to favor the euro's.

-M

Ken B. said...

Barnes and Martin will vouch for me--I'm married, and show it, but I ain't fat.

Though there may be something to the stereotype. We had a guy from another game group join us for a Twilight Imperium session. He quipped: "Your group is oddly shy of the usual fat gamers."

I dunno, man. We were just the cool geeks who could geek out like mad and still get laid. It's a talent.

Thaadd said...

The statistics geek in me is curious about this breakdown. I'm also just plain old nosy about what everyone looks like! :)

I think I fall into thin category, maybe. Carry a bit much muscle for waif. Yay for peasant stock.

Muzza said...

There's nothing wrong with Peasant Stock but I can never find Peasant Stock Cubes...

Michael Barnes said...

It's true- Eurogamers tend to be MUCH fatter than the slimmer, sexier AT-types. Go to any given game convention and compare the relative weight of a 4 player game of NOTRE DAME with a 6 player game of TI:3.

Something about Euros just tends to attract the fat, dumpy, and homely. Y'know, the kids that got picked on in middle school and now invest all of their waning emotional energy in boardgaming.

I'll vouch for Ken B.- he's quite a strapping lad...definitely not one of those shoggoths typically sidled up to a game of TICKET TO RIDE.

Ken B. said...

At least you didn't call me a "strap-on" lad. Then things just get creepy. Or much more exciting. I can never tell which.

notbillysparkles said...

Sadly enough, I'd lay odds that I'd win the F:AT fat ass contest hands down! LOL!!!

What can I say? I've never once been "skinny" my whole life. I was the "athletic big kid." I was always in pretty good shape until I met the wife-- and that's when everything went to pot.

No more impromptu games of street hockey, basketball or anything really. Quit smoking, drinking excessively, and using drugs recreationally-- not to mention chasing skirt: I was no Casanova but I did catch the occasional tail.

So, with all the fun stuff behind me I fell back on my drug of choice: food.

Billy Z.

P.S: I hate you skinny bastards.BZ.

Michael Barnes said...

Nah Billy, you're one of the cool fat people...that puts you in the same class with Peter Jackson, Santa Claus, and Meat Loaf.

Ken B. said...

Except Pete Jackson ain't fat anymore.

notbillysparkles said...

Peter Jackson ain't fat no more?!

Fuck's this world coming to?
